Fulton County Commissioner Bridget Thorne will host a town hall for District 1 residents at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.

The district covers Johns Creek and parts of Roswell, Alpharetta and Sandy Springs. The meeting will take place at the Health and Human Services North Facility, 4700 Northpoint Parkway, Alpharetta.

Two topics are on the agenda: updates on the Fulton County Animal Shelter and resources for veterans, according to a Fulton County Government post on Instagram. County leaders and panelists will present information on programs for the more than 40,000 veterans living in Fulton County.

The shelter update comes at a pressing time. WSB-TV reported Thursday, Oct. 8, that Fulton County Animal Services had 454 dogs in its care, nearly 80 more than its humane capacity of 375. LifeLine Animal Project, which operates the shelter, asked for foster families and adopters. The shelter is an open-access facility, meaning it cannot turn animals away even when full.

Kennel space had also been temporarily reduced because of a county painting project, WSB-TV reported. The shelter said overcrowding has grown as metro Atlanta families face economic and housing challenges.

On the veterans side, Fulton County's Veterans Resource Hub lists services including help with VA claims and disability compensation, housing assistance for at-risk veterans and a specialized court program called VETS through Fulton County Superior Court. The county's Veterans Empowerment Commission, a 14-member advisory body to the Board of Commissioners, meets monthly to recommend policies and funding. Fulton County allocates up to $1 million annually to nonprofits supporting veteran housing and wellness, according to the resource hub.

Thorne, who represents District 1, was elected to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners in 2022.

No registration requirement was listed in the county's announcement.
