The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for Roswell and the rest of central Fulton County on Friday, July 24, valid until 9:45 p.m., as thunderstorms dumped heavy rain across the metro Atlanta region.
The warning, issued at 3:51 p.m. by the NWS office in Peachtree City, named Roswell explicitly among locations expected to experience flash flooding. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain had already fallen in the warning area, with an additional 1 to 2 inches possible through the evening.
Big Creek, which flows through Roswell in both Forsyth and Fulton counties, was under an active Flood Warning as of Friday afternoon.
The flooding hit hardest to the north. In Hall County, at least five inches of rain fell in 24 hours, according to 11Alive/WXIA. Eight roads were reported flooded in the Gainesville and Flowery Branch area, and one road collapsed entirely: Falcon Crest Drive off Warren in Flowery Branch.
No Roswell-specific road closures had been confirmed as of Friday afternoon. The NWS warning cautioned that small creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses could flood, along with other low-lying areas.
A broader Flood Watch covered much of metro Atlanta and north Georgia throughout Friday.
The NWS urged drivers to avoid flooded roads, stating that most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
No statement from Roswell Fire, Roswell Police, or the city's Emergency Management Division regarding Friday's flooding had been released at the time of publication.
