Roswell families looking for a free way to keep kids reading this summer still have time to join the Fulton County Library System's "Dig Into History" challenge at the Roswell Library branch on Norcross Street. The program wraps up Friday, August 1.
The challenge invites readers of all ages to explore American history through books, library programs, and activities. It's the July focus of the system's broader "Unearth a Story" Summer Reading Program, which launched Monday, June 1, and is produced in partnership with the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation.
Participants can register and log books through the Beanstack Tracker app or online at fultoncounty.beanstack.com. The library system encourages readers to share discoveries on social media with the hashtag #Bookfossil.
America250 library cards
With the nation marking its 250th anniversary, the Fulton County Library System is distributing limited-edition Georgia Reads for America250 library cards at all Georgia public library branches on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. The cards feature the theme "Honor the Past. Read for the Future" and connect to a curated list of 25 books on American and Georgia history, organized by grade level for K-12 readers.
Julie Walker, vice chancellor for libraries and archives and Georgia's state librarian, said the card "is a visual reminder that your library card can take you anywhere."
The initiative is a collaboration between Georgia Public Library Service, the Georgia Council on Literacy, and the Georgia Municipal Association.
July programs at the library
The events calendar includes "Dig It: Unearthing Artifacts," a hands-on archaeology program led by Jeff Thompson where participants explore the science of uncovering the past and take part in a mock dig. Weekend movie screenings tied to the America250 theme continue with "Lilo and Stitch" on Friday, July 24, and "Brother Bear" on Friday, July 31.
Roswell's own America250: Tapestry of Generations celebration runs through Saturday, December 19, with programs, performances, and exhibits citywide.
