Woodstock police shot and injured a 38-year-old Roswell man after he allegedly threatened to shoot people from a retention pond on the evening of Oct. 22.
Nijm Scott was in stable condition at an area hospital as of Oct. 23, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is leading the investigation at the Woodstock Police Department's request. Two officers also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at a hospital.
What happened
Woodstock officers responded to a suspicious person call near Paden Street and Maple Street around 6:48 p.m. on Oct. 22, the GBI said. They found Scott sitting in a retention pond near a walking trail.
Scott threatened to shoot anyone who approached him and said he was going to start shooting, according to the GBI. He then made a sudden movement, and officers fired, hitting him.
Officers pulled Scott from the water. Crews from the Woodstock Fire Department and Cherokee County Fire & Rescue treated his injuries at the scene before he was taken to a hospital.
Authorities have not released the names of the officers who fired their weapons. Fox 5 Atlanta reported that investigators have not confirmed whether Scott was armed or whether a weapon was recovered from the pond.
Charges and warrants
Scott faces local charges of felony terroristic threats and felony obstruction, according to Woodstock police. He also faces active arrest warrants out of Gwinnett County for felony terroristic threats, Woodstock police said, according to WSB-TV.
Neighbors describe chaotic scene
Neighbor Jay Jackson told WSB-TV she saw Scott acting strangely around the pond about half an hour before the shooting. She said it was not the first time she had seen him in the pond.
Kent Fluke, another neighbor, told WSB-TV he had his windows open and heard the gunfire. "Eight to 10 in succession right below my window," Fluke said.
Deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and troopers with the Georgia State Patrol also responded to the scene, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
What comes next
The GBI said the investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case file will go to the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.
