Roswell volunteers have 6 days left to sign up for Rivers Alive cleanup

Roswell volunteers have six days to sign up for the city's annual Rivers Alive waterway cleanup. Registration closes Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The free event runs Saturday, Sept. 19, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The City of Roswell and Keep Roswell Beautiful are co-hosting the cleanup as part of a statewide campaign to protect Georgia's 70,100 miles of rivers and streams.

Last year's effort drew more than 300 volunteers who collected over 600 pounds of litter, pulled more than 1,000 pounds of invasive plants and put 300-plus native plants in the ground, the city said in an Instagram post promoting this year's event.

Volunteers will split into small groups and fan out to sites across the city. Locations include Don White Park, Seven Branches Park, Roswell Historic Homes and the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. Organizers also listed Riverside Park, Waller Park, Dotsie Garner Mills Park, and stretches of Big Creek, Foe Killer Creek and Hog Waller Creek. Tasks range from litter pickup and mulching to storm drain marking.

Families and groups who want to work the same site should note their group name during registration.

The morning wraps up with a celebration at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, 9135 Willeo Road, where organizers will tally results. Coffee and beverages will be provided. Early registrants can pick up a free Rivers Alive T-shirt while supplies last.

The event is family-friendly, though participants must be at least 5 years old.
