The Frances McGahee Youth Day Parade will march under the banner "Tapestry of Generations" on Saturday, October 3, after the Roswell Recreation Commission voted 5-0 to approve the theme at its Thursday, July 9 meeting.

The decision ties Roswell's 76th annual youth celebration directly to the city's America250 initiative, a yearlong series of events marking 250 years of American independence through local history, public art, performances, and family festivals.

Five commissioners voted in favor: Amour Carthy, Cliff Dittmore, Jose Gonzales, Erica Lowman, and William Strika. Chair David Smith and Vice Chair Erica Davis were absent. Carthy made the motion; Lowman seconded it.

The Roswell Youth Council selected the theme after considering several original ideas, according to the commission's agenda report. Council members concluded that creating a separate parade theme would be "redundant and could dilute or confuse the community-wide message" already established across the city's America250 programming.

Last year's parade carried the theme "Growing Together" for the 75th anniversary. This year, by adopting the shared theme, the parade joins a unified celebration that includes public art installations, live performances, exhibits, and educational programming throughout Roswell.

The theme already shaped the city's Saturday, July 4 celebration at Roswell Area Park, which drew thousands of attendees as part of the same America250 initiative, according to Appen Media.

Recreation Director Steven Malone also briefed commissioners on an upcoming budget presentation and dredging work at Ace Sand II. The meeting at the Adult Recreation Center lasted 46 minutes.

The financial impact of the theme approval itself is listed as "None" in the commission's agenda report.

The 76th Youth Day Celebration is free and open to the public. It begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 3 on Historic Canton Street and will include the parade, Art Block, Fall Farm Days, Touch-A-Truck, and Food Truck Alley.

The Recreation Commission's next work session and regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Adult Recreation Center.
