Grace Pinto dropped nearly 10 seconds off her 800-meter freestyle time, finished in the top 10 nationally in two events and earned qualifying cuts for elite open-age competition. She is 15 years old.

The Blessed Trinity Catholic High School sophomore competed at the Speedo Junior National Championships in Irvine, California, Aug. 3-7, setting personal bests in all four of her long course freestyle events against a field of the country's top swimmers age 18 and under.

Pinto's biggest time drops came in the distance events. She swam the 800-meter freestyle in 8:52.43, slicing 9.45 seconds off her previous best, and clocked 17:07.26 in the 1500-meter, a 6.08-second improvement. Both earned top-10 finishes. In the 1500-meter, the winner posted 16:38.15 and the eighth-place finisher went 17:02.30, putting Pinto's time within striking distance of the podium.

She also posted a 2:02.77 in the 200-meter freestyle (a 1.35-second drop) and a 4:19.38 in the 400-meter (down 2.73 seconds), both top-20 finishes.

What the cuts mean

Blessed Trinity's announcement states Pinto earned Senior National and U.S. Open cuts in all four events. Published USA Swimming time standards confirm her times cleared the U.S. Open qualifying threshold in the 800-meter (standard: 8:56.79) and 1500-meter (standard: 17:07.99). A U.S. Open cut qualifies a swimmer for the Toyota U.S. National Championships, the country's top open-age meet, a stage typically reached by elite college-level swimmers.

For a 15-year-old still two years from her senior season, that's rarefied air.

Pinto already holds Blessed Trinity school records in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle. The Titans' swim and dive season opens in winter 2026-27, and she will carry her new national-level qualifying times into that campaign.
