Sandy Springs shooting suspect shot himself in leg fleeing scene, was found by Roswell police
Roswell police responding to a 911 call about a shooting victim ended up finding the suspect in a Sandy Springs shooting who had accidentally shot himself in the leg while fleeing.
Bienvenu Deonoudjou, 28, was denied bond Thursday, Aug. 20, on charges of aggravated assault and a firearms charge stemming from the Aug. 15 shooting outside Nubia Cafe and Restaurant at 8599 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, according to WSB-TV.
The shooting happened around 5:43 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, after a fight inside the venue spilled into the parking lot. The victim was struck three times: in the chest, in the arm and a graze on the side. Sandy Springs police detective J.T. Williams said the chest wound landed just inches from the victim's heart.
"It was an absolute, absolute miracle," Williams said.
The victim left the hospital that day.
Roswell officers provided first aid
After the shooting, Deonoudjou fled but inadvertently shot himself in the leg, according to Sandy Springs officer Jarrell Green. A separate 911 call about a person shot brought Roswell police to Deonoudjou, who claimed he had been shot at the same Roswell Road location.
Green commended Roswell officers for providing emergency medical aid to Deonoudjou before the ambulance arrived, saying his wound appeared serious. Deonoudjou remained hospitalized until Wednesday, Aug. 19, four days longer than the man he allegedly shot.
Officers arrested Deonoudjou as he was being discharged from the hospital. Williams took out warrants charging him with aggravated assault and a firearms charge. A judge denied bond the following day.
Cafe shut down as illegal after-hours club
The investigation also revealed that Nubia Cafe was operating as an unlicensed after-hours club. Sandy Springs police, fire and code enforcement conducted a multi-agency inspection and shut the business down, issuing citations for serving alcohol without proper permits.
Williams said the shooting victim and a friend told investigators that employees inside the cafe were selling bottles of alcohol for $150 each. WSB-TV reached a man who said he was involved in managing the cafe, but he disconnected before providing details.
